    Overview

    The R&D Research Assistant performs a wide variety of technical tasks in support of specific Melaleuca new or existing products.  The Research Assistant is expected to use his/her understanding of Science and training to conduct the necessary laboratory experimental work.  This includes generating and analyzing data, making observations and recommendations to their supervisor.    The work is typically “hands on”, in a lab, in a plant or pilot plant.

    Responsibilities

    Essential

    • Perform established test procedures. Become proficient in standard operating procedures and test methods relevant to the position. 
    • Develop test plans and generate accurate and reproducible data. Record data per established company standards including use of Laboratory Notebooks.
    • Document and summarize experimental data for review and interpretation.
    • Communicate results or observations to supervisor and other team members, making special note of unexpected results or observations.
    • Develop an understanding of and the ability to use available resources needed to get the job done.
    • Help solve technical problems and propose technical experiments
    • Learn and apply Design of Experiments (DOE) as well as Mini-Tab (statistical software) in general.
    • Maintain and supply materials for a safe, orderly laboratory working environment.
    • Perform storage stability tests for trial compositions and Melaleuca products.
    • Maintain accurate records of trial compositions and observations.
    • Evaluate competitive products, Melaleuca products and trial compositions according to established procedures.
    • Calibrate and maintain lab equipment.

    Additional

    • Prepare prototypes for sensory and in home use tests of Melaleuca products and competitive products.
    • Use internal computer systems to record and analyze data, prepare graphs, reports and memos and communicate with coworkers in R&D and in other Melaleuca Departments.
    • Prepare data summaries using appropriate mathematical and statistical tools available in Microsoft Excel, Mini-Tab and other computer applications.
    • Evaluate and recommend finishing and rework procedures for non-standard lots of Melaleuca products.
    • Assist chemists in preparing and entering Bill of Materials (BOM) and other electronic forms to support Purchasing, QA and Operations.
    • Represent R&D function in support of QA, Operations, Purchasing and Marketing activities.
    • Obtain information and raw material samples from Melaleuca suppliers.
    • Perform and summarize experimental designs incorporating multiple samples.
    • Train associates in the use of laboratory equipment and procedures.

    Qualifications

    Essential

    • Associate’s with training and/or prior experience or Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific discipline.
    • Proficiency using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
    • Familiarity with basic statistical analyses.
    • Good communication skills.

    Additional

    • Chemistry, biology or biochemistry background and/or laboratory experience preferred.
    • Knowledge or experience using common lab instruments (e.g. pH meter, viscometer).
