To help keep up with this growth we are looking for outstanding Director of Global Environmental Health & Safety to manage our our next generation global EHS lead a critical product innovation and product marketing category within our quickly growing wellness portfolio.

Overview

Position Overview:

 

As Director of EHS, you will play a critical role in creating Melaleuca’s next generation EHS strategy. With a strong understanding of both the US and global EHS laws and practices you will be responsible for bringing to life critical areas of our EHS in a way that connects to Melaleuca’s mission of enhancing lives while delivering our core axiom of exceptional products at reasonable prices. Reporting to the Sr. Vice President of Operations, you will become a core partner in developing the long-term vision for the Melaleuca EHS while preserving the core values for which it has stood for over 35 years. This role is for a developing EHS leader with strong business acumen, roll-up-your-sleeves mentality, and the desire to be part of a highly motivated, collaborative team of business leaders.

 

Responsibilities

Safety & Environmental Planning & Accident Prevention:

  • Lead efforts to develop short and long term global employee safety and Environmental improvement strategies.
  • Manage the Safety Management Assessments process, compliance reviews and cultural surveys, utilizing both internal & external resources, and lead efforts to identify the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement.
  • Control significant loss producing exposures by recommending meaningful & practical interventions that will lead to reductions in injury risk exposure, workers’ compensation costs and consistent regulatory compliance.
  • Lead corporate teams and efforts to ensure that the safety & accident prevention programs will enhance the level of knowledge, commitment and compliance of employees throughout the global organization
  • Manage activities, provide leadership direction to personnel of operating facilities in the development and implementation of safety plans, goals and accountabilities. Develop and support implementation of strategic programs and initiatives that ensure facilities are in compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations.
  • Develop and deliver training packages so company can meet regulatory deadlines for mandated training. Where regulatory activity has occurred, provide corporate support to address/correct potential violations, negotiate penalty settlements and/or act as mediator with the regulatory agency.

Regulatory Compliance:

  • Assists global organization in understanding and complying with regulatory and company standards via formal training and assessments, and regular communication vehicles.
  • When regulatory activity has occurred, works closely with the facility leadership and, if necessary, acts as the mediator with regulators to negotiate a settlement that reduces liability to Melaleuca.
  • Review and incorporate, as appropriate, safety and health standards mandated by U.S. OSHA and other regulatory authorities in non-U.S. countries. Must keep fully informed on all existing and proposed changes in global regulations
  • Act as the standard bearer and subject matter expert on global regulatory compliance and safety management practices/processes. Manage the assessment process of each facility’s environmental compliance efforts against company policies and applicable (country, state/province, and local) laws and regulations. This will be done by conducting facility environmental assessments and by providing necessary technical expertise on specific issues.
  • Prepare regulatory compliance reports to management that fairly and objectively detail the inspection results and recommended action. Review capital projects for environmental impact; provide leadership in obtaining specific permits needed to ensure capital projects can be completed within budgetary and time constraints.
  • Conduct environmental due diligence for potential worldwide acquisitions, divestitures/facility closings and manufacturing realignments; provide interpretation and guidance for environmental implications of property transactions.
  • Maintain lines of communication between key business partners relative to environmental compliance and sustainability programs. Stay abreast of business goals/objectives and manufacturing decisions that could potentially be impacted by relevant environmental laws and regulations.
  • Provide leadership and direction to environmental personnel in the compliance function and cross-functional internal teams to support company-wide compliance, environmental management and sustainability issues. Direct and coordinate communication to provide recommendations for ongoing compliance and obtain necessary senior management approvals for applicable policies and programs as well as resolution for critical environmental challenges. Provide direction to facility managers for resolution of environmental issues.

Strategy

  • Establishes global training standards and minimum requirements and develops/delivers training materials and programs using a variety of media to meet customer needs.
  • Provides and coordinates the training necessary to support safety programs & compliance throughout the organization.
  • Develops and support implementation of strategic programs and initiatives that drive the environmental stewardship and sustainability elements. Develop and implement policies, programs and communications that enhance the company’s environmental stewardship position within the food industry sector and meets internal and external stakeholder expectations for environmental performance. Interact with key internal cross functional stakeholders to ensure environmental stewardship has alignment with global strategic business initiatives.
  • Maintain lines of communication between key business partners relative to Safety and environmental compliance and sustainability programs. Stay abreast of business goals/objectives and manufacturing decisions that could potentially be impacted by relevant environmental laws and regulations. Provide leadership and direction to environmental personnel in the compliance function and cross-functional internal teams to support company-wide compliance, environmental management and sustainability issues. Direct and coordinate communication to provide recommendations for ongoing compliance and obtain necessary senior management approvals for applicable policies and programs as well as resolution for critical environmental challenges. Provide direction to facility managers for resolution of environmental issues.

Workers’ Compensation:

  • Monitors workers’ compensation performance and develops/distributes comparative performance and trending reports.
  • Provide guidance to business operations on progressive claims management practices as it relates to incident prevention to help control workers’ compensation costs.
  • Identifies the locations experiencing the most frequent and/or serious workers’ compensation experience, providing assistance to improve performance by targeting cost containment measures and accident prevention activities.

Recordkeeping and Safety Performance Metrics Tracking:

  • Provides leadership for the development, implementation and user support of safety performance metrics data collection and reporting using appropriate computer applications.
  • Serve as Business Owner of Injury/Incident Reporting systems.
  • Monitors the company’s safety performance and develops/distributes regular comparative performance trending reports.

 

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform major duties/responsibilities:

  • Passion for employee Safety and Environmental improvement and proven leadership skills as evidenced by consistently meeting or exceeding objectives.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S., Mexican, Chinese, and other global safety regulations and Environmental pertinent to business; ability to engage in working relationship with key regulatory agencies to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ability to train and mentor safety personnel at the corporate and local plant levels that will enhance and build depth within the global safety community.
  • Knowledge of Melaleuca processes, facilities, management structure and business objectives.
  • Strong comprehension and ability to utilize specific computer skills necessary to trend and communicate safety compliance and safety performance.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and team facilitation skills with experience interacting with all levels throughout the entire organization.
  • Ability to travel 40% of time including globally to all Melaleuca locations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • 10+ years of HSE Management experience for global multisite company
  • Experience managing successful teams
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office software and of database development and management
  • Competent analytical problem solver
  • Strong communicator with polished Customer/Partner relationships
  • Ability to travel up to 40% including international locations
